Goldenrod deserves some love
There's one particular native plant genus that gets an undeserved rap. Goldenrod (Solidago) is commonly blamed for seasonal allergies, when the true culprit is ragweed. In fact, goldenrod is an "ecological powerhouse" and a keystone species, with more than 22 varieties native to Michigan. This post on the MBGNA website, entitled "Embracing Goldenrod," provides compelling reasons why we should all find a place for goldenrod in our gardens.

Online sales open Aug. 5 for WCCD fall sale
The Washtenaw County Conservation District's Fall tree & native plant sale opens for online pre-sales on Aug. 5. The Fall sale offers bare-root conifers, various 1-gallon potted shrubs and trees, and more than 40 potted native plant species and garden kits (limited quantities). Planting aids and rain barrels available. Order early and pick up on Friday, Sept. 20. Visit the sale website here.

Master Composter class starts Sept. 19

Want to transform yard debris and kitchen scraps into a nutrient-rich, natural soil amendment? Learn how to make compost tea, or compost with red worms? All these topics and more are covered in the Master Composter class, hosted by Project Grow and the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner's Office. Certification is available for students who attend classes, pass the take-home exam and volunteer 10 hours in the community. A team of Certified Master Composters along with Master Gardeners and an MSU instructor will conduct the classes. Thursdays, Sept 19 – Nov 14. 6:00 – 8:30 PM. No class Oct 3, Oct 31, Nov 7.

Native Restoration Nursery open house Sept. 14

This is a rare chance to shop a local source of native shrubs and trees that's not normally open to the public. They sell wholesale, which means they have a huge inventory. Great species – wonderful for home landscapes. Come shop at this local gem! Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 am to 1 pm. 19185 Bush Road, Chelsea.

What a beautiful day in the gardens and at the farm on June 10! It was wonderful to greet you all. We hope you gained some ideas and inspirations for your own green space, and enjoyed talking with the garden owners and other Walkers.


Your participation in this community event gives back to the community, with all proceeds directed to Farm & Garden's annual grant and scholarship awards. We'll announce the financial results soon.
